That is the request some Spotify subscribers have been receiving since at least late 2025. To meet it, they have to track down the plan manager and, standing next to them, scan the Spotify Family QR code shown on that person&#8217;s phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On paper, it takes a few seconds. But an old phone, listening only on a computer, a trip away or shared care between two homes can all get in the way. How does this QR code check on Spotify accounts work? What can you do if it fails? Here are the steps to follow, the difficulties to expect and the reasons why Deezer may turn out to be simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This check concerns the Family plan. It should not be confused with the Spotify codes used to share a track or a playlist, which are covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharesub.com\/cms\/en\/how-to-make-a-spotify-qr-code\/\">our guide to making a Spotify QR code<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Spotify Family QR code verification for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify Premium Family brings together up to six Premium accounts for \u00a321.99 a month in the UK, at the price checked in October 2026. One condition applies: members must live at the same address as the plan manager, in other words the person who pays for the plan. Spotify uses two checks to verify this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first relies on the address provided. When joining the plan, each member enters their full address. Spotify may ask for it again if the plan manager moves house or if the platform cannot confirm it. On this point, Spotify states: \u2018We don&#8217;t track your location. We only check your address to verify.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second check uses a QR code. Newer and more demanding, it can require some members to scan a code on the plan manager&#8217;s phone to prove that they live with them. The earliest subscriber reports we found date back to December 2025, in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who receives this request? Spotify&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.spotify.com\/uk\/article\/family-address-verification\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">help page<\/a> only mentions \u2018some Premium Family members\u2019. It says nothing about how they are selected, nor whether the check can be repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the QR code scan works, step by step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The member receives a notification or an email asking them to confirm that they live with the plan manager. They then have seven days to complete the check.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The plan manager opens the Spotify mobile app. They tap their profile picture, then \u2018Your Premium\u2019 and \u2018Manage\u2019 to bring up the QR code.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The member stands next to the plan manager and scans the code with the camera on their own phone.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Once the scan has gone through, the plan carries on as normal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you start, bear in mind three constraints. The process only works in the mobile app, not on a computer or in the web player. Both people must be in the same place. Finally, the QR code refreshes every few seconds, roughly every five seconds according to one subscriber. A screenshot sent by message therefore won&#8217;t get you through the check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if the verification fails<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the QR code, Spotify&#8217;s help page does not spell out what happens to the existing plan after a failed scan or a missed seven-day deadline. For address verification, it states that the member loses access to the plan and switches to the free, ad-supported version: you should expect the same outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the following 12 months, the member cannot join any other Family or Duo plan. They can, however, take out a different plan, such as Premium Individual. Spotify says it is possible to rejoin the same plan after a failed address verification, but does not say so for the QR code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When QR code verification causes problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For everything to go smoothly, everyone needs a recent smartphone, an up-to-date Spotify app and a camera that works. You also need to be able to meet up with the plan manager within the week. Several common situations make these conditions hard to meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You listen to Spotify on a computer, in a browser or on a speaker<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening to Spotify on a computer or a speaker is not enough to pass this check. If you use the desktop app, the web player, a smart speaker, a games console or a TV, you will need to install Spotify on a phone to do the scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan manager faces the same constraint. Even if they manage and pay for the plan from their computer, they have to install the mobile app to display the QR code on their phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your phone or tablet is too old<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify recommends using the latest version of the app on both phones. According to its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.spotify.com\/uk\/article\/supported-devices-for-spotify\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">list of supported devices<\/a>, that version requires at least iOS 16.1 on iPhone or Android 7.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upshot: an iPhone 7 or an older model, stuck on iOS 15 or earlier, can no longer install the current version. The same goes for an iPad Air 2 or an iPad mini 4. Yet these devices are often handed down to children once their parents have upgraded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You are not in the same place as the plan manager<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having the plan manager there in person is the toughest constraint. Meeting up within seven days is far from straightforward when family members do not live under the same roof full time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a business trip or a holiday just as the notification arrives<\/li>\n\n\n<li>a student on a year abroad or living in another city during term time<\/li>\n\n\n<li>separated parents, with children in shared care between two homes, while the plan is in one parent&#8217;s name<\/li>\n\n\n<li>a partner who works away during the week, on assignment, at sea or on deployment<\/li>\n\n\n<li>a stay in hospital or an extended stay with a relative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all these cases, the rule stays the same: the member and the plan manager must meet in person before the deadline runs out. Otherwise, the member loses access to the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This requirement raises a question of fairness. A member who genuinely lives with the family can lose access over a week&#8217;s absence, then be shut out of any other Family or Duo plan for a year. Spotify makes no exception for shared care, studies or business travel, and offers no other way of proving that you live under the same roof. Applied without any clear means of appeal, such a rigid restriction risks being unfair on families who do not live together full time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The camera doesn&#8217;t work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cracked lens or a faulty camera module can be enough to block the verification. Spotify offers no fallback, such as a code to type in manually. On the plan manager&#8217;s phone, a cracked screen can also stop the QR code from being read properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other obstacles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The date and time on the phones<\/strong>: Spotify recommends checking them on both devices. A mismatch can therefore cause the scan to fail.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>The refreshing code<\/strong>: a Dutch subscriber reports that the first code they scanned returned an error, while the next one was accepted.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>The missed notification<\/strong>: an email that lands in the spam folder or a notification swiped away too quickly, and the seven-day deadline can slip by unnoticed.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>No exceptions<\/strong>: Spotify&#8217;s help page makes no allowance for shared care, travel or members without a smartphone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do if you can&#8217;t scan the QR code<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify offers no method other than scanning in the plan manager&#8217;s presence. You can still prepare both phones to keep errors to a minimum. Depending on what is blocking you, here is what you can try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Before you scan.<\/strong> Update the Spotify app on both devices. Switch on automatic date and time, then close and reopen the app. Next, scan the code directly from the plan manager&#8217;s screen. If the first attempt fails, try again straight away with the next code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If your phone is too old, its camera is broken or you only listen on a computer.<\/strong> Borrow a recent smartphone and install Spotify on it. Log in to your own account, do the scan, then log out. This option is not described in Spotify&#8217;s help pages, which refer to the member&#8217;s phone camera without saying whether it has to be the device they normally use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you are far away from the plan manager.<\/strong> The simplest solution is still to plan the scan for the next time you see each other, provided that falls within the seven days. Otherwise, and if there is trust within the family, the plan manager can do it for you. They log in to your Spotify account on a phone other than their own, a relative&#8217;s for example, use that device to scan the QR code shown on their own phone, then log out. The method is not ideal, because it means giving them your password. To limit the risk, change it to a temporary password beforehand, then choose a new one once the verification is done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option is to do the scan over a video call. The plan manager shows the QR code during the call, either by filming their phone or by sharing their screen, and you scan it off the screen of the computer or tablet receiving the call. With a bit of luck the picture quality is good enough, and one Dutch subscriber says they managed it this way. One caveat, though: Spotify requires both people to be in the same place and says nothing about video calls, so it is not certain that this method meets its requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If none of these solutions works for you<\/strong>, because of a phone that is too old, a damaged camera or a particular situation such as shared care, contact Spotify customer support. Explain precisely what is stopping you from scanning the code: a phone too old to install the latest version of the app, a camera that no longer works, a child who lives between two homes. Customer support should be able to lift the restriction or suggest another solution, even though no exception appears in the published rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When these difficulties keep coming back, switching to another platform may become an option worth considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deezer, a less intrusive and cheaper alternative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Deezer, joining a Family plan works by invitation, from whichever device you choose. Members have no address to provide, no QR code to scan and no check to carry out in the presence of the plan owner. For a family spread across several homes, or one still using older devices, this makes a real difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheaper than Spotify on the Family plan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Plan<\/th><th>Spotify<\/th><th>Deezer<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Family (6 accounts)<\/td><td>\u00a321.99<\/td><td>\u00a319.99<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are monthly prices with no commitment in the UK, checked in October 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared with Spotify Premium Family, Deezer Family saves you \u00a324 a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sound quality that is often higher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of Deezer&#8217;s paid plans include lossless Hi-Fi quality in FLAC format. In a Family plan, every member has access to it. Deezer&#8217;s help centre states quality of up to 24-bit\/192 kHz, depending on the track and the device used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotify launched its lossless mode in autumn 2025. It is capped at 24-bit\/44.1 kHz. On either service, check the audio quality setting in the app: on Spotify, lossless has to be switched on manually, device by device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On paper, then, Deezer keeps the edge. When it comes to listening, wired headphones or a speaker connected over Wi-Fi are your best bet for hearing the difference, as Bluetooth compresses the signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Catalogue and keeping your playlists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switching service won&#8217;t cost you your music: record labels and independent labels distribute their tracks on both platforms. Deezer claims more than 120 million tracks. It also offers podcasts, editorial playlists and Flow, its personalised mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also bring your Spotify playlists across in a few minutes. Each member keeps their own playlists, recommendations and listening history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To cut the bill compared with an individual plan paid for on your own, you can join a shared Deezer Family plan on Sharesub.
